Once A Swimmer, Always A Swimmer: Urho Saari Swim Stadium

Anyone will tell you that my transition from Los Angeles to South Bay (Manhattan Beach) hasn't been the easiest for me.  But Manhattan Beach IS in Los Angeles County! ...You say?  Yes, but grocery stores close here at 9pm.  The best sushi place here doesn't even compare to the mediocre sushi I got in LA.  I still haven't found a yoga studio I love as much as the Bryan Kest PowerYoga Studio.  The list goes on and on.  But one thing I love about South Bay is how active everyone is here.

I was a competitive swimmer for 12 years when I was younger, so when I found out there was an indoor pool just a few miles north of where I lived, I was stoked.  (I'm Filipino, so indoor was a major score since I tan very, very easily.)

Urho Saari Swim Stadium is located in El Segundo.  The facility is mainly used for swimming lessons, recreational swimming, and their swim team, but it does open up for Adult Swim on designated hours.  I decided to drop by on a Monday night and check it out.

It's free for El Segundo residents, and $3 per session for non-residents.  There was no need to bring my buoy, as they had buoys and kick boards for public use.  For a majority of my swim time I didn't even need to share a lane with anyone, which I appreciated.  I got 700 meters in and called it quits.  Planning to use this facility more as cross training for my upcoming Lululemon half marathon!
