Tips for Becoming a Morning Workout Person

I haven't always been a morning person.  In fact, it wasn't until months into my training that I decided to start working out and/or running in the morning since most races start in the early morning.  I've also read some studies that show that those who workout in the morning burn more fat than those who workout in the evenings.  Some days are easier than others to get up and I still have days where I accidentally sleep through my alarms.  But one thing's for sure, after a morning run I definitely feel more energized throughout the day.  Plus, my evenings are free for some yoga, cross training, or happy hour with my friends.

Here are some tips for getting your butt up in the morning from a person who was previously a night owl:

1.  Sleep in your workout gear and prep for your early morning.
They're clean.  It's comfy.  Why not?  I also prepare for my run, keeping a Luna bar or banana and a bottle of water on my nightstand that I can consume in my comfy bed.  Doesn't seem like much, but that extra 10 mins I get to stay in my warm, comfy bed makes all the difference.

2.  Set multiple alarms.

I set at least 5 alarms.  Seriously, the first one never gets me up.  Plus that snooze button is so easy to press.  Setting multiple alarms means I can't make any excuses for not getting up. And I leave myself funny little notes (that I change up often), so I don't wake up with a grumpy face.

3.  Sleep early.
This one might take some time to get used to, especially for us night owls.  But it can be done.  Some things that helped me sleep easier was reserving my bed just for sleeping, not turning on Netflix before bed, keeping my cellphone on my dresser instead of my nightstand, and reading a book.

4.  Do whatever is closest, fastest, and easiest.
I typically stick to running or spinning class for my morning workouts.  Running because all I have to do is walk outside my door and go for a run.  And spinning class because my gym is a 2 minute drive away (but remember to pack your gym bag the night before!).  Do whatever is closest, fastest, and easiest so you can't rationalize with yourself that you don't have time and because you have to get to work!

5.  Develop a buddy system.

I'm so thankful for my friend Lisa!  She gets up at 5:45 AM to join me on my runs.  There are so many days that I would have slept in instead of running if it weren't for this girl.  Buddy systems are great, because they guarantee you will get up if someone is expecting you there.
