Parker Mesa Overlook Hike - Malibu, CA

Monday, November 16, 2015

For the past couple months Adam and I have had races, birthdays, weddings -- sometimes two or more in one weekend!  And we kinda realized it had been a long time since we'd been on a real day date together that didn't involved a bib number or a birthday cake.  So we used last weekend to spend some time together the best way we know how -- on a hike.  For those of you that don't know, on our very first date Adam took me on a hike in La Cañada, and though we love our group adventures and double/triple/quadruple dates sometimes it's nice to take it back to the start with just us two.

On Sunday, Adam took me on a hike he went on earlier in the year leading up to the Parker Mesa Overlook.  There are a couple of options to get up there.  A 6.7-mile round trip hike with 375 feet of elevation gain from Trippet Ranch, a 5.7-mile round trip hike with 900 feet of elevation gain from the southern end of East Topanga Fire Road at the top of Paseo Miramar. Or the route we took: a 1.3 mile hike with over 1,200 ft elevation gain.  It's kind of a "secret" hike.  From PCH you turn right onto Coastline (just a few feet past the Getty Villa entrance), then turn right onto Surfview and drive all the way to the top.  There is a gate entrance that leads to a trail.  The trail is extremely slippery and steep, so if you're not used to steep elevation gains I recommend the longer routes.

From the start of the hike you already feel like you've left scene-y Los Angeles:

The rest of the hike was a bit steep, so I put my phone away and focused on the uphill.

You know you've reached your destination when you see the park bench:

And this gorgeous view 1,525 feet above the hustle and bustle of noisy Los Angeles:

Fun fact:  Parker Mesa Overlook is in Topanga State Park which is the the world’s largest wildland within the boundaries of a major city.

I ended the day with an iced mint mojito from Philz:
